Love is in the Air

This Friday, February 14th is Valentine’s Day. Whether you are happily single, partnered or looking for that special someone, it is crucial that your home environment supports and nourishes love in all its forms – and that includes self-love!

As a holistic interior designer, who is passionate about Wellness Design, I wear many hats and apply many different philosophies to my work. When it comes to romance, relationships and marital harmony, Feng Shui is an approach impossible to ignore.

The energy of love is like sunlight, we all need it to grow and thrive. Encourage love, in all its forms, with these 5 Feng Shui tips:

  • Transform Your Bedroom into a Romantic Oasis:My first question to clients who are wanting to supercharge love, is: “Do you LOVE how your bedroom looks?” The answer is almost always a resounding “NO”! Work with a trusted interior designer to bring your romantic vision to life. Everything from wall color, to window treatments, linen and art should be taken into consideration.

  • Make Room for Balanced Love: If you’re in a relationship, make sure your bed has balanced energy on both sides. You should be able to approach the bed easily from either side. Nightstands should match in size, weight and style. If you’re single and wanting to attract love, empty out a drawer to make room for someone new.

  • Harness the Power of Scent: Aromatherapy is a powerful wellness tool for the multi-sensorial designer. Add essential oils to an oil lamp or humidifier. Lavender is synonymous with sleep and has been used for centuries to alleviate anxiety. Rose is a classic fragrance often linked to romance. Cedar-wood is more masculine and will help create a calming, cozy bedroom atmosphere.

  • Eliminate Technology from the Bedroom: Technology in the bedroom is discouraged by interior designers, the world over, for a number of reasons as it: creates more mindfulness in the morning; promotes conscious reflection; supports a better night’s sleep and encourages romantic intimacy. You have been warned: hang a TV in your bedroom at your own risk!

  • Don’t Forget Lighting: Does anyone ever feel sexy in fluorescent light? I don’t think so. Nothing does more to create romance in a space than the perfect lighting. Reject stark overhead lighting. Sconces, pendants and lamps that cast mysterious patterns and shadows is the way to go. If you have the budget, add a fireplace. Or, for a simple, cost effective fix, add scented candles. I love Byredo, Diptyque and Le Labo candles right now.

Before trying any of these tips at home, remember one thing. The most important relationship we have in life is the relationship we have with ourselves. Self-love, self-care and self-worth must all be in check before anything or anyone else. No amount of Feng Shui design magic can help you in the long-term if the energy of self-love is missing.

“If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else? Can I get an Amen?”

– Ru Paul
