Client Case Study: How We Transformed a Child’s Bedroom into a Teen Retreat

Updated: Oct 28, 2020

As children grow into the tween and teen years, their needs and interests evolve. These changes are often reflected in their bedrooms. What once was an imaginative play-space pairs back to a safe place to study and retreat.

In an early meeting with a prospective client in need of a full renovation and redesign of their pre-war home, I suggested a complete update of their pre-teen daughter’s bedroom, which still looked like a nursery in so many ways. When I was shown the room, we identified numerous opportunities to elevate and enhance the look, feel and functionality of the space.

I’ve often found the most joyful parts of my decorating projects are to create terrific teen rooms. Identifying the daughter’s needs, and including her wants, we helped to style the room of her dreams – one that will serve her until she leaves for college:

BEFORE:

  • A lack of organized closet space meant clothes were often hung on doorknobs, piled on chairs and spread all over the floor. By introducing a new armoire from Pottery Barn Teen, we awe were able to increase closet space while giving current wardrobes a much-needed facelift with better organization.

  • Accumulated clutter in the form of toys, games, books and craft kits gave the space a disorganized, disarrayed appearance. Editing, donating and better storage for what remained was the solution.

  • A twin bed shoved against the wall, a child’s desk too small for the space and a wallpaper border mounted halfway up the wall were all no longer appropriate. More mature, long-lasting furniture were necessary additions.

AFTER:

  • We removed the old, outdated wallpaper substituting it for a cheerful new wall color. We selected ‘Heather Plum’ by Benjamin Moore.

  • Sophisticated and practical storage was added with a wonderful new armoire in matte white finish with a full-length built-in mirror.

  • With middle-school on the horizon, our tween approved a full-size desk and chair eliminating the need for the old overstuffed chaise-lounge.

  • We introduced a brand new queen-size bed upholstered in white velvet – perfect for lounging with a good book or best friends.

  • Twinkly fairy lights were installed around the headboard to give it just the right amount of a giggly, girly touch. The lights are easy to uninstall later down the track if needed.

My client’s daughter was beyond thrilled with her new room!
