Preparing Your Home for Fall

It has been one of the hottest summers on record here in NYC. But with Labor Day right around the corner, you can already feel a slight chill in the air. The changing seasons represent a powerful shift in energy. I love helping clients achieve balance within their homes during these transitory times.

We can all find greater balance at home and at work this fall by making small tweaks to our décor, habits and daily routines:

Fall Trends for 2019: We are starting to see a few great design trends emerge for the season. Woven seats are all the rage. Whether it is cord, leather, rattan or caning, retailers are showcasing some seriously beautiful seating with gorgeous weave. Statement sculptural pieces are having a moment too, often geometric in form. Soft neutrals juxtaposed with saturated earthy tones is very effective trick. This is a great was to both celebrate the season and bring nature into our living spaces – a great biophilic touch! Deco inspiration continues to shine with bold and dramatic pieces. Look out for furniture that features eye catching patterns, sophisticated lines and brass renderings.

Fall x Feng Shui: Fall is represented by the Metal Element which signifies binding and contraction (cooling, consolidation, fall harvest). After all, metal has the ability to hold together other elements and unite them. The best colors to represent metal in your home are silver, grey and white. Open up windows regularly to aerate the home and let the good chi flow. Decorating with candles and textured rugs instantly makes your home cozier, too. And don’t miss this great opportunity to declutter.

Back to School: The start of fall is “Back to School” season, too! Whether you have children starting kindergarten, high school or college – or perhaps you’re even starting an online course yourself – spend some time creating a workspace that promotes productivity, enhances organization and feels good to be in. A functional desk space, ergonomic furniture, task lighting and symbols signifying success are all essential ingredients.

Embrace the Great Outdoors: Spending time in nature as the seasons change helps your body acclimatize and prevent “shocking” your immune system. Exercise mindfulness by being aware of what is going on around you and practicing the power of intent. Fall is one of my favorite seasons for walking through Central Park and enjoying the foliage. Take the colors you see and bring them indoors.

Need help implementing any of the above? That’s what we’re here for. Set up a residential consultation today. Wishing you all a fabulous fall season!
