Bath design is truly coming into its own, with a wonderful new emphasis on creating luxury, function and comfort in the decor of this room. And it’s not just the primary bath, or the guest bath that homeowners want to see this level of design. But now all the bathrooms in the home are getting more attention.
Several of my recent blogs have focused on wellness design in the bath: Luxurious Bathroom Upgrades, My Latest Luxury Bath Remodel, Upgrading to a Steam Shower, and there are so many more from years past.Â
As you can clearly see, I just LOVE designing the bathroom! Lately I’ve seen some fresh concepts being incorporated into the vanity area that are worth shouting out. And as we all know, the vanity area gets the most use out of the space. So if your vanity is not working for you, here are some of the emerging design trends and technology to consider in a bathroom update:
Incorporating Lighting into the Vanity:
We are coming to understand that using lighting effectively brings drama, style and a sense of luxury. Integrated lighting in the mirror is a great assist to grooming and makeup, and adding cabinetry with lighting adds both functionality and atmosphere in your bathroom.Â

When on dimmers, the vanity also becomes a beautiful, non-intrusive night light for those that need to have late night access to the bathroom but don’t want to trip and/or disturb others. Combined with smart home integration, the vanity lights can be controlled from a central wall tablet, or even your phone.
Floating Vanities
There are a host of great reasons to wall hang your next bathroom vanity. In small bathrooms they offer a sleek contemporary look, make the room look larger, and the open space beneath makes it easier to clean around and underneath.
In addition, floating vanities can be installed at whatever height is comfortable regardless of age, abilities or height.
Wood Tones
Continuing on the trend of inviting nature and the natural world inside, natural wood vanities are adding a fresh organic style in many bathrooms now.

Some of my favorite products I've been seeing with wood tones are:
Skaarsgard Vanities from Robern

Sausalito 46" Single Wide Sink Vanity from Pottery Barn

Thick Stone Counter-Top
Thicker counter-tops provide a more substantial and visually impactful appearance, giving a high-end feel to the bathroom.

For stone lovers, it also showcases the material; bringing attention to the unique characteristics and beauty of the stone’s veining, patterns, and colors. Cambria is an excellent source for a look such as this.
Minimal, Clean and Contemporary
Even small spaces can exude style and attitude. This look walks away from heavy ornate door styles and even the traditional look of a shaker style door. For a clean, modern look consider the flat panel vanity cabinet with some interesting hardware.Â

As always, I like to add a reminder that it doesn’t always require a full gut to update and uplift the functionality and add some high-end design. Adding a new vanity that serves your needs can add style, storage and improved functionality to any bathroom.
