Last week, Google announced it will keep employees working from home until at least July 2021, making the search-engine giant the first major U.S. corporation to formalize such an extended timetable in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
With many businesses now following Google’s assertive lead, the need for functional, stylish at-home workspaces has never been greater. Earlier this year, we published a blog on “How to Design a Soul-Nourishing Home Office”. While we received lots of positive feedback, the reality is that many of us here in New York don’t have an extra room to dedicate to a full-time office. But don’t let that stop you!
Here’s how you can work from home with optimized functionality and invigorating style:
Place a Desk Behind Your Sofa: If you have an open floor-plan with a seating area off to one side, try placing a desk behind your sofa. Ideally the top of the desk should align with the back of the sofa to maintain clean lines.
Make the Most of that Unused Nook: An unused nook, like the space adjacent to a fireplace or window, can easily be the ideal spot to fit in a mini workspace. Keep surfaces clean at the end of your workday and over the weekend to minimize clutter and unsightly overflow.
Clearly Define Your Work Zone: If you have a large living area, consider floating a desk out in front of a wall or credenza. Add a small rug to clearly delineate the workspace from the remainder of your living space.
Optimize Shelving as a Work Station: If, on the other hand, you’re particularly tight on space, a compact wall shelving unit can serve as the perfect workstation you need to place a laptop and get your work done.
Support Your Physical Health: Be mindful of how your workspace is supporting your physical health and invest in materials that benefit indoor air quality. Be mindful when bringing new items in your home. Be resourceful, get creative and listen to what your mind and body needs.
