While you might imagine the terms “modern” and “farmhouse” to be at opposite ends of the interior design spectrum, this lux combination of styles is now trending in a massive way. Embracing rustic country elements with a sophisticated contemporary spin, Modern Farmhouse Décor uniquely blends clean lines, natural color palettes, layered textures and organic materials to create a timeless look that’s rich with character.
The goal is to create a space that is simultaneously warm, cozy, relaxing, comfortable and practical. It opts for weathered finishes over fussy touches. Color stories for furnishings are neutral with a heavy emphasis on wood and concrete. Often, at times, it can feel semi-industrial embracing rectangular shapes and case goods furniture (nightstands, dressers, bookcases) which can be softened by juxtaposing cushy seating and rounded shapes.
This easy, comfortable design style lends itself well to “Hygge” (the Danish sense of, and appreciation for, the coziness and joy of Life’s everyday moments). From my experience working with clients to achieve this style, it certainly creates that “I love to live here” vibe, one of the many reasons this style continues to soar in popularity.
Farmhouse Décor initially started out emphasizing lots of white, shiny, surfaces. Now, Modern Day Farmhouse Décor has evolved to include more burnished finishes, a darker mix of materials, and live edge wood pieces. Examples of this evolution include concrete sinks and tiles for both floor or backsplash, exposed Edison bulb fixtures and brushed bronze or gold finishes. Matte black faucets and furniture legs are also quite striking. Originally carpeting was very neutral or cream grounds in modern farmhouse but now it overlaps with elements of Boho using weathered oriental rugs to set the mood.
