Designing the Office of the Future

The disruption of the last year has altered nearly every aspect of our lives, including tasks as fundamental as going to work. While many office workers are still working from home, others across the country are now beginning to return to their offices in person for the first time in over a year.

As of May 19th, New York City will return to full capacity in restaurants and workplaces. Much of the country has already done so or is in the process of carefully navigating this uncharted terrain. Most companies, large and small, are currently grappling with the logistics of how to optimally ensure full return of their workforces in a safe and effective way. Design has a new, critical role to play in this process. Certainly, the American workplace will not return to an exact image of what it was pre- pandemic. There appears to be some consensus that a hybrid model will emerge – i.e. greater flexibility incorporating remote working as part of the format most companies will utilize. We strongly believe that the one-size-fits-all office cannot, should not, and will not exist in the future of work!

Design Case Study: Feng Shui Meets a Boutique Accounting Firm

Julie Schuster Design Studio recently began consulting for a boutique accounting firm in New York City. Our task? To help them create separate, contained work areas from what had formally been a large open format office set up.

In collaboration with our new client, we:

  • Created semi-private, socially distanced workspaces for all partners and employees alike;

  • Revitalized office layout to optimize flow and maximize exposure to large windows that bring in wonderful natural light and views of the nearby park;

  • Utilized modular office design with fabric panels that introduce lovely pops of color to the overall design scheme. These pops of color are reinforced and supported by our selection of neutral wall colors, carpet and accessories;

  • Applied core principles of Feng Shui design, carefully selecting auspicious elements to enhance the Fame and Reputation Bagua regions for the firm;

  • Enhanced natural elements introducing art that focuses on representations of nature adding to the biophilic qualities of the space.

As we all forge our way forward, our offices and workspaces will increasingly focus on principles of Wellness Design. Air quality, ventilation, personal space, positive energy and Biophilia are well worth emphasizing both at home AND at work.
