Alfresco Dining Design for Spring and Summer

One of my favorite things about the warmer months is alfresco dining. Balmy nights, rosé all day and dining under the stars – what could be better? If you’re lucky enough to have an outdoor dining space or renting a home for the summer this blog post is for you!

These alfresco dining design ideas for spring and summer are the perfect way to reconnect with nature in a way that effortlessly fuses lifestyle and holistic design practices:

Revive Old Furniture: Exposed to the elements, your outdoor furniture is sure to experience natural wear and tear. Bring weathered tables and chairs back to life with a fresh coat of durable paint. I am obsessed with Sherwin Williams 2019 Color of the Year – “Cavern Clay SW 7701”. The company describes it as a “warm terracotta color with ancient elemental roots… a nod to midcentury modern style.” Perfect for the outdoors!

Integrate Bold Colors and Textures: A simple was to quickly add color to your outdoor dining space is to throw a Turkish towel over your dining chairs. They instantly add color and texture perking up the scene throughout the day and keeping you warm when the temperature drops in the evening.

Add Warmth with Hurricane Lanterns: A hurricane lantern is a “must have” for every outdoor dining space. They are inexpensive, weather resistant and have powerful impact. The glass cases stop the candles from blowing out and are easy to move. Consider placing in groups threes on and around the table at staggered heights to enhance visual interest.

Say it with Stripes: If there’s one iconic, summertime pattern that will NEVER go out of style when designing for the outdoors it’s the cabana stripe. Eye-catching, timeless, and vibrant, it’s the epitome of effortless chic. Add this element of classic flair to your exterior setup through upholstery, a patio umbrella, bowls and plates or an easy throw pillow.

Curate a Thoughtful Tablescape: Last, but certainly not least, take time to consider, plan and execute a beautiful tablescape that integrates elements of the surrounding environment. I often use the night sky and surrounding foliage to inform my color palette design. You can’t go wrong with a dark blue tablecloth, burlap table runner, pillar candles and cream/white flowers. All framed up with bistro lighting – divine!

Remember, how an environment feels is just as important as how it looks. Environments that are visually appealing and physically comfortable create positive energy which will support you rather than deplete you.

Happy alfresco dining, everyone... Cheers!
