Steam Therapy: History, Health Benefits and Design Integration

Last month I had the pleasure of attending and presenting at the NKBA’s annual Kitchen and Bath Industry show (#KBIS2019) in fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada. Check out our recent blog for a full recap of the event.

We were incredibly impressed the Modenus Designhounds Tour and all of their sponsored education sessions. Especially impressive was the Mr. Steam brand which clearly demonstrated the many benefits of steam to personal health and well-being. With that being said, we would like to dedicate this week’s blog to steam therapy, its many health benefits, and how to integrate Mr. Steam products into bathroom design.

Steam therapy is not a new concept. Origins of the steam bath come from the Roman public baths, which began during the height of the Roman Empire. These Roman baths were supplied by natural hot springs from beneath the ground. Modern technology has created the ability to have a refreshing steam spa in our bathrooms at home!

From a Feng Shui perspective steam represents a combination water and fire elements (water + heat = water vapor). As a Certified Living in Place Professional (CLIPP) I am also very cognizant of the many health benefits for clients of all ages, especially those suffering from physical health problems.

Health benefits of steam include:

Respiratory Health: Steam improves breathing by opening up nasal passages related to symptoms of allergies and viruses, promotes sinus drainage, loosens bronchial secretions, provides temporary relief from asthma symptoms and soothes a dry/sore throat.

Skincare: Steam cleanses the skin, relieves acne conditions, opens up pores, lubricates, hydrates, rejuvenates, makes shaving and waxing easier and leaves your skin with a healthy glow!

Physical Wellness: Steam increases blood circulation, boosts metabolism, reinvigorates tired muscles, increases muscular flexibility and burns calories at an average rate of 150cal/15min session at 114degF.

Well-Being: Steam relieves stress by encouraging relaxation, promotes deep/restful sleep, fosters a sense of well-being and can help increase length of REM cycles during sleep.

Holistic Health: Steam removes toxins and excess sodium from the body, may relieve pain/discomfort from arthritis and rids the body of metabolic and other waste products.
