“Aromatherapy” is the study of the therapeutic power of pure essential oils. The energy of specific essential oils can help heal the body and the mind and is an integral part of “alternative medicine.” There is a powerful connection between aromatherapy and Feng Shui since both disciplines work on an energetic level to create positive shifts in well-being. Hence, scents are a powerful part of Feng Shui design as they encourage balance and harmony.
Fragrance vs Essential Oils
An important distinction must be made between “fragrances” and “essential oils”. The term “fragrance” means different things to different people. Usually “fragrances” are scents that are synthetic or artificially made (think perfumes or colognes created through the chemical process of esterification). If the smell is from a natural origin (e.g. essence from a flower, seed, root, leaves or bark) you’re dealing with an “essential oil”. From an energetic perspective, essential oils are preferable since they derive potent energy from nature and help you inhale more deeply. Synthetic fragrances are bad Feng Shui as they clog energy and fill your space with artificial toxins. When in doubt – read the label. If you can’t pronounce any of the ingredients = that’s a sign it’s not a “pure” essence!
Methodologies
1) To create fresh, vibrant scent-energy in your home, first start by cleansing the air. Do this by opening up your windows and allowing your home to aerate. If your space or apartment doesn’t have many windows, consider integrating air purifying plants: Boston Fern, Dracaena and Areca Palm are all great options.
2) If you’ve never used essential oils, ease into the ritual using air sprays and air mists made using natural oils. Essential oils can be added to aromatherapy diffusers too. I find the electric water vapor diffusers more effective than the candle ones. Choose whichever is most convenient for you.
3) Inhalations are great too! Fill a stainless-steel cooking bowl with your favorite essential oil and hot water right off the boil. Place your head under a towel and breathe in deeply for up to 10 minutes. Always be careful when boiling water is involved. This trick is great for you skin too – you’ve got to love that!
4) Candles and good quality incense make great aromatherapy gifts – just always buy products with natural ingredients.
My Favorite Essential Oils
There are so many different essential oils to choose from your favorite health food store, alternative medical center or online. Some of my favorite essential oils include: vanilla for well-being, cinnamon for harmony, lavender for relaxation, citrus for cleansing, bergamot for wealth and jasmine for love and romance.
As with all Feng Shui, follow your intuition. Find a moment’s peace to see what you’re instinctively drawn towards. Often, we gravitate towards the things we are missing in pursuit of balance. Most importantly – have fun and infuse with positive intent!
