IDS: New York City's New Chapter

The Interior Design Society (IDS) is an independent national organization with more than 3000 members. As one of the country's largest design societies, IDS offers its members an ongoing education, business support, and numerous networking opportunities within a community of like-minded interior designers.

I am currently working closely with IDS to help spearhead the formation of New York City's newest chapter. To get the ball rolling, we held a social event in the first weeks of summer at the showroom of Christopher Guy, within the New York Design Center. The initial response and attendance was amazing, encouraging and inspiring. It was wonderful to see how many people were interested in seeing a new chapter come to the city.

The Importance of Fellowship

When becoming a “solopreneur” in the world of design, you find that some days can get a bit lonely. Having a society like IDS here in New York City creates a unique space where we can discuss ideas with other designers and share the joys and trials of our craft. Our clients, of course, are wonderful and necessary if we are to prosper, but at the end of the day we all need like-minded individuals to talk to. Family and friends are absolutely necessary for support, but a fresh perspective from fellow designers is invaluable!

One key goal for the new chapter is to attract a diverse, cross section of professionals that service the industry from a variety of angles. The auxiliary professionals I funnel business to have typically been sourced from networking groups where I am also a member. Having a Rolodex of talented and enthusiastic professionals can be a real “game changer,” ensuring the best quality results are delivered to your client in a timely and professional manner.

The Importance of Networking

Networking is of crucial value, regardless of your industry. As a Feng Shui practitioner, I am a firm believer in the notion that positive energy comes back to those that give off the most positive energy. In plain English: “by giving, you are given the most.” And let’s be honest, helping others and collaborating feels good! To quote Gary Vaynerchuk in Jab Jab Jab Right Hook: ‘there is no sale without the story, no knockout without the set-up. We need to be willing to give in order to receive.’ Amen!

Upcoming Events

Our kick off meeting will be held on the 17th of September at 6pm (venue to be confirmed). There will be food, drinks and a fabulous speech from guest Emily Thompson of Emily Thompson Flowers (florist to the rich and famous).
