Define Vision and Goals: Take time at the onset of your new design project to clearly define your vision and goals. Knowing what you want to accomplish, as well as the kind of environment you want to create, will set the course of the project. I often encourage clients to meditate on this imagining how the space looks, feels and even smells.
Co-Create a Mood Board: Creating a mood board with your interior designer helps both parties communicate and share ideas in a visual way and will ultimately help you determine what world (and what doesn’t work) early on in the design process. Mood boards are a great collaborative strategy that will help eliminate the often-costly mistakes of knee-jerk purchases. Using mood boards will also ensure that you and your designer share the same vision throughout the lifetime of the project. Pinterest is a great digital tool that can be used virtually and updated in real time.
Customize Your Design Collaboration: Collaborate with your interior designer in a way that works best for you and your family. Don’t Get Caught in the Red Tape: Regardless of the breadth and depth of your project, bear in mind that construction rules vary from building to building. Some buildings are self-managed, but most have managing agents who are responsible for enforcing the rules – and there are many! The board of directors, or a committee of the board, usually has to approve any project that will require workmen to enter the building. I am an expert at dealing with difficult co-op boards and board renovation applications in New York City. I have also been helping clients navigate the current restrictions imposed by COVID, as well a total oversight while they remain safely off-site during any work. I can also review potential options to give buyers cost analysis of any upgrades or work they might consider before purchasing/moving into their apartment or home.
