Hamptons Meets High-Rise: Bringing Coastal Calm to City Living

The summer heat is starting to roll in, and now is the perfect time to escape the city and seek the laid-back coastal Hamptons. But for those who have obligations in the city this season, it’s possible to turn your urban dwelling into Hamptons chic with some smart decorating. The beauty of this design style is its casual, unfussy furnishings rooted in tradition. The effect creates a capsule of timeless coastal charm.

Without further ado, here’s a brief breakdown on how to translate the breezy Hamptons style into an urban apartment.

Coastal Colors

Incorporate hues of warm whites, pale teals, and soft grays. As always, I turn to Sherwin Williams for inspiration and their Coastal Cool Collection does not disappoint!

Most Hampton homes choose a palette that’s predominantly warm white, with intentional pops of color throughout. It’s a style that we heavily associate with vacation and relaxation.

Grassy Textures

When I think of the beach, grassy textures are one of the first things that come to mind. Add furnishings with rattan, sea grass or abaca rope to create that seaside-cottage feel. The addition of a sisal rug will also ground the space in the sea of light hues.

Modern Slipcovers

It can be unrealistic to completely swap furniture for the season, but that’s where slipcovers come in! White slipcovers on furniture such as couches are a hallmark of Hamptons style. Even better, a slipcover is way easier to store during the off-season.

Sheer Drapery

Install sheer linen drapery throughout the home to create a relaxed, breezy feel. You’d be amazed how a change of curtains can change the look of a space. Pair sheer curtains with solar shades for both function and style.

Natural Accents

For decorative accents, think of the natural elements of the coast. Woven baskets, wooden trays, and flowers such as hydrangeas will tie it all together. When looking for style specific decor I try to make sure the pieces are also functional in order to hide items that may distract from the overall design. Catch-trays and lidded boxes are great decor options for this.

If you can’t escape this city, bring the Hamptons to you! Mindful decor is all about creating the space that you feel your best in. And who doesn’t feel amazing by the beach?
