Itching to move, but can’t afford a brand-new home right now? Perhaps an apartment facelift is just what the interior-design doctor ordered!
Case Study: Mid-Century Pied-A-Terre, Upper West Side – NYC
Our team recently updated a newly purchased Upper West Side pied-a-terre for a couple from Connecticut. Our clients raised their children in the suburbs and wanted a part-time apartment in the city to be closer to their grown children and families, as well as allowing them convenient access to Lincoln Center for concerts and shows.
This case study is a great example of how small tweaks can be used to give an overall feeling of newness and freshness without blowing the bank. We gave minor updates to the bathroom, a partial facelift to the kitchen and a crisp new look to décor and furnishings:
Kitchen: To modernize the kitchen, existing cabinetry was re-painted in a white satin finish from Sherwin Williams and new black hardware was installed. The corner cabinet was removed and replaced with a slick new Bosch 18” dishwasher. We then added a Cambria quartz countertop, a stainless-steel under-mount sink and faucet by Kohler to maximize simplicity and minimize maintenance. A new GE microwave was also installed. We preserved the peninsula’s butcher-block countertop and painted the base cabinetry in a bright, bold aqua to compliment the newly hung blown-glass light fixture from Tech Lighting.
Open Plan: An open-plan layout connecting kitchen, dining area and living room is a great strategy to open up a space for entertaining. A set of pocket doors were installed to close off the bedroom and allow privacy when necessary.
Living Room: Bright and bold colors were used in the living area to create a sense of warmth and freshness. A new sofa was purchased and custom upholstered in a striated texture with decorative pillows to add contrasting patterns and color. A petite yellow swivel chair was added to increase functionality.
Dining Area: A dining table set for six means this couple can now also host dinners! We upholstered two blue host/hostess chairs to offset four molded wood guest chairs. We then brought in the bold, warm colors from the adjacent living area, using yellow and orange napkins to set the tabletop. Finally, we introduced a touch of low-maintenance greenery in the center of the table.
Bathroom: Our clients’ standard three-piece bathroom received some much-needed TLC. Fresh paint was applied to compliment the patterned shower curtain. We then installed a compact Robern medicine cabinet for storage complete with vanity light for visibility and decorative glass shelf for toiletries. We also recessed a small custom cabinet into the wall for additional storage.
Bedroom: We created a focal wall with a bronze metal headboard, elongated walls sconces and a pair of oak nightstands with brass finger-pull hardware. Bold floral bedding complimented the newly acquired abstract impressionist artwork on the bedroom walls.
The couple were thrilled with their updated home and can’t wait to host their first holiday party this year.
